This editorial reflects on the development of open science and publishing from a Nordic perspective. Infrastructures of openness—software, services, and shared standards—form the foundation for a sustainable and inclusive scholarly community. Yet, the role of communities and stakeholders must be acknowledged: technology alone does not create openness, as its realization requires cultural change, long-term collaboration, and trust. The editorial emphasizes that open publishing is not merely a technical or administrative matter, but fundamentally a communal process where local and international actors collectively build responsible scholarly communication.
